Kingwood Decor & Laser is a family-run laser and woodworking studio in Fort McMurray, Alberta. Every piece is designed, cut, engraved, and crafted by the people who love what they do — and it shows.

How we got started

For 20 years, Melissa worked as a professional photographer. For 15 of those, she also reviewed images for Shutterstock — always with a keen eye for detail and design. On the side, she spent four years making custom home decor signs with a Cricut machine. Just a hobby. Just a passion.

Then COVID hit. Shutterstock eliminated her position, and suddenly there was a choice to make. Go back to a 9-to-5, or go all in.

Melissa sat down with Peter and said: I want to do this for real. With his wholehearted support — and 20+ years of woodworking experience to bring to the table — they ordered a CNC machine, then a Glowforge laser. Within two months, orders were pouring in. A family business was born.

Today, Kingwood runs out of a full studio in their home basement — Melissa at the lasers, Peter in the workshop crafting boards, and their daughter Ashlee helping keep everything running smoothly.
